That’s all a forex trade is. Everything else, the charts, the jargon, the strategies, sits on top of that one idea.

In this guide to forex trading for beginners, I’ll explain the basics the way I explain them on day one of our beginner batch: what the market is, how prices move, the words you’ll hear everywhere, and what a sensible first step looks like for someone in India. No prior knowledge needed.

What Is the Forex Market?

Table of Contents

What Is the Forex Market?

How Currency Pairs Work

Common Terms Every Beginner Should Know

What Moves Currency Prices?

Forex Market Timings for Indian Traders

Is Forex Trading Legal in India?

Common Forex Trading Styles

Risk Management: The Part Most Beginners Skip

Your First Steps in Forex Trading for Beginners

Mistakes I See Beginners Make Every Month

Should You Learn Alone or Join a Course?

Frequently Asked Questions

What is forex trading in simple words?

How much money do I need to start forex trading in India?

Is forex trading for beginners risky?

What are forex market timings in India?

Which currency pair is best for beginners in India?

Forex, short for foreign exchange, is the market where currencies are exchanged. When an Indian company pays a supplier in the US, it sells rupees and buys dollars. When a tourist from London lands in Delhi, they sell pounds and buy rupees. Banks, companies, governments, funds and traders do this all day.

According to the Bank for International Settlements triennial survey, global forex turnover was about 7.5 trillion US dollars per day in 2022. That makes it the largest financial market in the world. For a beginner, the key takeaway is this: prices move every second because someone, somewhere, always needs to exchange money.

How Currency Pairs Work

Currencies are always quoted in pairs, because you can only value one currency against another. Take USD/INR at 84.00:

USD is the base currency.

INR is the quote currency.

84.00 means 1 US dollar costs 84 rupees.

If you buy USD/INR, you expect the dollar to rise against the rupee. If you sell it, you expect the dollar to fall. That’s the whole logic of long and short in forex.

Common Terms Every Beginner Should Know

Term

Simple meaning

Pip

The smallest standard price move. In USD/INR on Indian exchanges, prices move in steps of 0.0025.

Lot

The trade size. On NSE, one USD/INR contract is 1,000 US dollars.

Spread

The gap between the buy (ask) and sell (bid) price. It is a cost you pay on every trade.

Margin

The money blocked by your broker to open a position.

Leverage

Controlling a large position with a small margin. It increases both profit and loss.

Stop loss

An order that closes your trade at a fixed loss so one bad trade can’t ruin you.

When it comes to forex trading for beginners, don’t try to memorise all of this in one sitting. You’ll pick it up naturally once you start practising on a demo account.

What Moves Currency Prices?

Interest rates: when a central bank raises rates, its currency often strengthens.

Inflation and economic data: GDP, jobs reports and inflation numbers can move prices sharply.

Trade and capital flows: heavy foreign investment into India tends to support the rupee.

Crude oil prices: India imports most of its oil, so higher crude usually puts pressure on the rupee.

Central bank action: the RBI often steps in to reduce sharp swings in the rupee.

In forex trading for beginners, you don’t need to forecast all of this. Just know when big news is due and avoid trading right before it.

Forex Market Timings for Indian Traders

Global forex runs 24 hours on weekdays, but Indian exchange-traded currency derivatives have fixed timings. On NSE, currency derivatives trade from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm IST, with cross-currency pairs open until 7:30 pm. The most active time for INR pairs is usually the morning and again when London opens around 12:30 to 1:30 pm IST.

Is Forex Trading Legal in India?

This is the most important part of forex trading for beginners in India. Forex trading is legal only in permitted currency pairs on recognised exchanges such as NSE and BSE, through a broker registered with SEBI. Permitted pairs include USD/INR, EUR/INR, GBP/INR, JPY/INR and some cross pairs like EUR/USD, GBP/USD and USD/JPY.

Trading on offshore apps that offer 1:500 leverage is not allowed under FEMA. RBI keeps an Alert List of unauthorised platforms. I cover this in more detail in our guide to forex trading in India.

Common Forex Trading Styles

Style

Holding time

Suited for

Scalping

Seconds to minutes

Very experienced, full-time traders

Intraday

Minutes to hours, closed same day

People who can watch screens during market hours

Swing trading

A few days to weeks

Working professionals and most beginners

Positional

Weeks to months

Patient traders who follow bigger trends

In forex trading for beginners, swing trading usually works better because it needs less screen time and gives more time to think before each decision.

Risk Management: The Part Most Beginners Skip

Risk is where forex trading for beginners usually goes wrong. Ask any trader who has been around for a few years and they will tell you that risk management kept them alive, not their strategy. A few simple rules go a long way:

Risk only 1% of your capital on a single trade while learning.

Always place a stop loss before you enter.

Size your position based on the stop loss distance, not on your mood.

Stop trading for the day after a fixed loss, say 3%.

Never add to a losing trade hoping it will turn.

Your First Steps in Forex Trading for Beginners

Learn the basics in this article until the terms feel familiar.

Open a demo or paper trading account and practise for six to eight weeks.

Pick one simple setup and one or two pairs. Don’t trade everything.

Keep a trade journal from the first day.

When demo results are steady, trade the smallest size possible with a SEBI-registered broker.

If you want this as a structured week-by-week plan, follow our forex trading training roadmap. And if you prefer learning by yourself first, read our guide on how to learn forex trading at home.

Mistakes I See Beginners Make Every Month

Starting with real money before understanding pips and lot sizes.

Using maximum leverage on the first trade.

Following tips from Telegram groups.

Trading during big news without a plan.

Quitting a method after two losses and starting a new one.

Almost every mistake in forex trading for beginners is fixed with a demo phase and a journal. It’s boring advice, but it works.

Should You Learn Alone or Join a Course?

You can learn the basics of forex trading for beginners alone with free material and patience. A course helps when you want feedback on your trades and a clear order to follow. If you decide to look for one, use our checklist on choosing a forex trading institute so you don’t get trapped by false promises. You can also join a free demo class at MonarkFX to see how we teach.

Advanced Chart Concepts: SMC, ICT and Liquidity

Currency pairs like USD/INR and EUR/USD respect liquidity and order flow just like stocks. Once the basics are in place, our forex students also learn:

Support and resistance and demand and supply zones as the base

Liquidity: equal highs and lows, stop loss clusters and liquidity sweeps

Smart Money Concepts (SMC): break of structure (BOS), change of character (CHoCH), order blocks and fair value gaps

ICT ideas: premium and discount areas and session timing

RSI divergence as confirmation at key zones, never as a standalone signal

These ideas are added in a fixed order so they sharpen your reading instead of cluttering the chart.
